Providing a Safe Space for American Samoa's Youth
Positive youth development is an intentional, pro-social approach that engages youth within their communities, schools, organizations, peer groups, and families in a manner that is productive and constructive; recognizes, utilizes, and enhances youths’ strengths; and promotes positive outcomes for young people by providing opportunities, fostering positive relationships, and furnishing the support needed to build on their leadership strengths.
We work with key partners such as Catholic Social Services, Hope House, American Samoa Community Hydroponics Development Farmers and other organizations to provide meaningful opportunities for service-learning and community service.
Youth complete a thorough assessment conducted by qualified staff. Once the client's needs are identified, resources are sourced for services needed including but not limited to primary care, dental care, educational advocacy, behavioral health counseling, special education services, family counseling etc.
PYCD conducts a Mentor Training and Certification semi-annually to provide a cohort of caring, adults who are willing to volunteer their time as Mentors for youth referrals. Mentors are positive role models who provide mentoring, tutoring, career exploration and/or recreational activities such as sports, swimming, etc.
Many times youth graduate from high school with guidance and instructions in academics; but no one has provided Life Skills Training to teach young people the soft skills they need to survive. These include interpersonal communication skills, conflict resolution, anger management, active listening and positive engagement.
PYCD uses the Botvins Lifeskills Training curriculum and delivers dynamic interactive sessions in both English and Samoan. Our staff have been trained and certified to provide Lifeskills Training to adolescents in high school and elementary.
If you or your organization is interested in offering Lifeskills Training for your youth/students, please contact us for more information.
Youth participants are encouraged to participate in career exploration programs such as the American Samoa Area Health Education Center (AHEC) program under the auspices of ASCC or the Summer Youth Employment Program administered by the ASG DHR WIOA program.
Our staff help youth apply to and register for all programs and services available to the community that will help youth explore various career opportunities.
PYCD offers training for youth to become engaged as Peer Mentors and support for individuals at risk of youth suicide or those experiencing hopelessness, family or relationship problems and in crisis.
Training content includes foundations of Human Growth and Development, Trauma Informed Care, Crisis Intervention, Signs of Suicide and Depression.
For more information on additional training, please contact the office.

We provide 24 hour shelter services for those in crisis and need access to an emergency shelter. Youth may stay in our facility for up to 72 hours without parent consent; allowing staff time to conduct a thorough assessment and contact pertinent authorities. We provide basic necessities include food, shelter, personal care items, clothing for those who access services.
Our staff provide first response and crisis intervention services when responding to an emergency call or referral from a school teacher, official, community member, pastor or anyone from the general public. All referrals are kept confidential.
A comprehensive psycho-social assessment is completed by trained, qualified staff. Based on identified needs, counseling is provided using cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and motivational interviewing techniques to engage the youth in behavioral change.
Should other services be needed, staff are responsible for contacting government agencies or community organizations for assistance as well as coordinating case management meetings to ensure youth needs are met by all participating service providers.
